Military members tend to have a higher debt-to-income ratio and that may worsen as Veterans transition to civilian life. For those suffering from mental health issues debt can spiral out of control. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the likelihood for having a mental health issue is three times higher for those who are in debt. Madison Blancaflor states in her recent article, “To make matters worse, studies show that people who struggle with existing mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety or even addiction are more likely to struggle with debt.
